In this edition, I would like to tell you about my experience harvesting rice in Ogata Village.
After asking a bit around for farmers who were okay letting me join in on their work day, I was lucky enough to be allowed to help out at the Saito family rice fields.
While I grew up in the countryside in Denmark, I have never experienced rice harvesting and I found the whole experience to be extremely fun and interesting.
The day (for me) started at 13:30. When I arrived at the rice field, they were already in the middle of harvesting one of the fields.
今回は、私が大潟村で体験した稲刈りについてお話ししたいと思います。
何人かの農家さんに声をかけて、作業に参加させていただける方を探していたところ、幸運にも斉藤さんという農家さんの田んぼでお手伝いさせていただけることになりました。
私はデンマークの田舎で育ちましたが、稲刈りを経験したことはなく、今回の体験はとても楽しく、興味深いものでした。
私の一日は13時30分から始まりました。田んぼに到着すると、すでに斉藤さんたちは一枚の田んぼで稲刈りの真っ最中でした。
Not long after I arrived, I was asked if I wanted to try the rice harvesting machine known as a “combine harvester” or just “combine” which I excitedly said yes too. While it looks rather complex with different knobs and handles, it was surprisingly easy to control, at least for the basic movement I was doing – I have no doubt that fully mastering it is quite difficult. On the left there were a handle which controlled the speed, and on the right there similarly were a handle which in turn controlled left and right movement.
到着して間もなく、「コンバイン」と呼ばれる稲刈り機を操作してみるかと聞かれ、興奮しながら「ぜひ！」と答えました。レバーやハンドルがいくつも付いていて複雑そうに見えましたが、基本的な動きだけなら意外と簡単に操作できました。もちろん、完全に使いこなすにはかなりの技術が必要だと思います。左側には速度を調整するレバーがあり、右側には左右の動きを制御するレバーがありました。
After going back and forth a few times the combine was full of rice and the tank had to be emptied into a small truck called a “Dump truck” or “Dump” for short. I was quite worried about missing the mark so I was relieved when the professional took over for this part.
何度か前後に動かしているうちにコンバインのタンクがいっぱいになり、小型の「ダンプトラック」（通称「ダンプ」）に籾を移す必要がありました。うまく位置を合わせられるか心配でしたが、プロの方が代わってくださり、安心しました。
After experiencing riding around on the combine, I also got to try what I would like to call “old fashioned farming”. We each got a small sickle and hand harvested places where it would be difficult for the combine to navigate to. This was also surprisingly fun and it especially felt great when I managed to cut a bundle of rice in one swift motion, though I can imagine how rough it must be doing that day in and day out.
Normally these bundles can manually be put into the combine for the rice to be taken from the stems, but they also allowed me to try to remove the rice by hand. Again, this – at least for the short amount of time I did it – was extremely satisfying to do. We were holding the rice and then, squeezing the stem of the plant with our thumb and index finger forced the rice off the plant in one go.
After doing this, and waiting for the combine to come back and fill the dump truck, we drove the truck to a big warehouse to empty the rice into a rice drying machine. This was also quite the endeavor, as we needed to make sure that we didn’t overfill the hopper. After this was done, we went back to the rice field where the whole process were to repeat, though I didn’t get to participate in that as my “shift” was done.
コンバインでの作業を体験した後は、昔ながらの農作業も体験させてもらいました。小さな鎌を手に、それぞれがコンバインでは入りにくい場所の稲を手作業で刈りました。これも意外と楽しく、一度で束をスパッと刈り取れたときはとても気持ちよかったです。ただ、これを毎日続けるのは相当大変だろうなとも思いました。
通常、こうして刈った稲束は手作業でコンバインに入れて脱穀しますが、今回は特別に手で籾を取る作業も体験させてもらいました。短時間の体験でしたが、これも非常に満足感のある作業でした。稲を手に持ち、親指と人差し指で茎をぎゅっと押しながら籾を一気に外すのです。
その後、コンバインが戻ってきてダンプを再び満たすのを待ち、大きな倉庫へ向かい、乾燥機に籾を投入しました。籾を機械に入れすぎないよう加減に注意しながらの作業で、これもなかなかの挑戦でした。作業が終わった後は再び田んぼに戻り、同じ工程を繰り返す予定でしたが、私の「シフト」はここで終了となりました。
All in all, I had a great time experiencing harvesting rice at the Saito family’s farm, and I am very excited to trying my hand at planting the rice come spring.
全体を通して、斉藤さんご一家の農場での稲刈り体験は本当に素晴らしいものでした。春には田植えにも挑戦してみたいと、今から楽しみにしています。
